Biosensor Application in Detecting Syphilis Disease: Literature Review
Abstrak
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum, remaining a global health challenge, especially in regions with limited access to healthcare services. Early detection is essential to prevent transmission and long-term complications. Biosensors, including Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and Point-of-Care Testing (POCT), offer fast, affordable, and user-friendly diagnostic solutions. This article aims to review scientific literature on the application of biosensors in syphilis detection, covering working principles, sensitivity, specificity, advantages, and technical limitations. The review results show that biosensors, particularly those based on lateral flow immunoassays, have great potential as early screening tools. Additionally, electrochemical and optical biosensor technologies demonstrate very high sensitivity and promising applications for on-site testing. However, challenges such as subjective interpretation, the need for local validation, and instrument costs must still be considered.
