Street vendors are a group with heavy and repetitive physical activities, such as standing for long periods of time, lifting weights, and performing the same movements continuously, putting them at risk of joint pain. One laboratory marker associated with autoimmune joint disorders is Rheumatoid Factor (RF), which is often used as a supportive test for joint inflammation. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between length of employment and Rheumatoid Factor (RF) levels in street vendors in Banyumas Regency. This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Work duration data were obtained through questionnaires, while RF levels were examined using the latex agglutination method. The study subjects consisted of 40 street vendors who met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rho correlation test. The results showed that all respondents had non-reactive RF test results. The correlation test showed there was no relationship between length of employment and RF levels (p>0,05). Based on these results, it can be concluded that length of employment is not related to RF levels in street vendors and that RF levels are likely to be influenced by other factors such as immunological conditions, genetic factors, and individual health status
RIVA FA ARUNI ROIKHANAH, ROSI WULANDARI , ALFI ANDINI NURKHASANAH, SUSI RUHANAH, Sri Kamalasari, SAHAL FAIRUZ ILHAM, SEPTI UTAMI, DITA PRATIWI KUSUMA WARDANI

https://ejournal.umbandung.ac.id/index.php/biodiverse/article/view/901

Herpesviruses are DNA viruses within the order Herpesvirales that can establish lifelong latent infections and contribute to the development of certain cancers, particularly those caused by oncogenic viruses such as Epstein-Barr Virus and Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated Herpesvirus. This article aims to review the classification and characteristics of herpesviruses, the mechanisms of oncogenesis mediated by latent infection, the types of cancers associated with these viruses, and the potential of vaccination as an infection-based cancer prevention strategy. Herpesvirus-mediated carcinogenesis involves the persistence of latent infection, activation of cell proliferation pathways, inhibition of apoptosis, epigenetic modifications, and immune evasion. Preliminary studies indicate that herpesvirus vaccines have the potential to induce both humoral and cellular immune responses, which could suppress infection and viral reactivation, thus holding promising prospects for reducing the future risk of virus-associated cancers.

Atikah Ifalia Ulfah Fachrul, Syifa Utami Asrianty, Yesi Repani

https://ejournal.umbandung.ac.id/index.php/biodiverse/article/view/754

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum, remaining a global health challenge, especially in regions with limited access to healthcare services. Early detection is essential to prevent transmission and long-term complications. Biosensors, including Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and Point-of-Care Testing (POCT), offer fast, affordable, and user-friendly diagnostic solutions. This article aims to review scientific literature on the application of biosensors in syphilis detection, covering working principles, sensitivity, specificity, advantages, and technical limitations. The review results show that biosensors, particularly those based on lateral flow immunoassays, have great potential as early screening tools. Additionally, electrochemical and optical biosensor technologies demonstrate very high sensitivity and promising applications for on-site testing. However, challenges such as subjective interpretation, the need for local validation, and instrument costs must still be considered.

Keywords: Syphilis, biosensor, POCT, RDT, Treponema pallidum

Adyttia Indra Gunawan, Almaydha Naim Sulasikin

https://ejournal.umbandung.ac.id/index.php/biodiverse/article/view/882

Laundry wastewater is a complex effluent with high organic and inorganic pollutant loads, mainly from detergents containing surfactants, phosphates, and various additives. High levels of parameters such as COD, BOD, TSS, phosphate, and anionic surfactants (LAS) exceed quality standards and have the potential to cause eutrophication and depletion of dissolved oxygen in water bodies. This literature review aims to analyze the effectiveness of the biodegradation approach using microbial consortia in simultaneously treating multi-parameter laundry wastewater. The review results show that bacterial consortia, particularly from the Pseudomonas and Bacillus genera, are capable of degrading various pollutants through metabolic synergy. This consortium has been proven effective in reducing phosphate (through luxury uptake and enzyme activity), COD/BOD (through the oxidation of organic compounds), anionic surfactants (via the desulfonation pathway), as well as oil, grease, and TSS. The success of the process is highly dependent on optimal conditions such as inoculum dose, contact time, pH, and oxygen availability. Although it offers an environmentally friendly and relatively economical solution, the implementation of full-scale biodegradation faces challenges related to long acclimatization times and sensitivity to operational conditions. Therefore, integration with physical-chemical pre-treatment and process optimization are necessary to develop an effective and sustainable laundry wastewater treatment system.
Tabina Khalishah Dzikra Dzakirah, Syifa

https://ejournal.umbandung.ac.id/index.php/biodiverse/article/view/761

Rabies and brucellosis are zoonotic diseases with significant public health and economic impacts, particularly in livestock sectors. Early detection and immune surveillance through serological tests are essential for effective control. The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) has become widely adopted due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This review compares the application of Indirect ELISA in the detection of rabies and brucellosis, focusing on reagent effectiveness and diagnostic performance. For rabies, the combination of TMB substrate and Protein A-HRP conjugate produced higher and more stable optical density (OD) readings at 450 nm, making it ideal for post-vaccination evaluation. In contrast, ELISA for brucellosis demonstrated high sensitivity (100%) but lower specificity (74.68%) compared to the Rose Bengal Test (RBT), making it more suitable as a preliminary screening tool. This comparison highlights the need to tailor ELISA designs to disease context—reagent stability for rabies and layered diagnostic strategies for brucellosis. The study also emphasizes the importance of optimizing local diagnostic kits and adopting integrated approaches in zoonotic disease control in Indonesia.
Anbar Rania Salsabila, Aldhi Ya Ganni

The utilization of butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L) as a local resource represents an important form of local wisdom that can be developed into innovative pharmaceutical biotechnology products. Butterfly pea flower contains various bioactive compounds with potential antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Through kombucha fermentation, these bioactive components may be transformed or enhanced, providing opportunities for the development of natural antifungal preparations. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate a kombucha-based spray preparation using butterfly pea flower as a locally sourced active ingredient from Rangkasbitung, Banten, and to determine its antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum, a pathogenic fungus associated with diseases and infections in horticultural crops. The spray formulations were prepared using different concentrations of butterfly pea flower kombucha, namely 20%, 30%, and 40%. The antifungal activity was determined using the inhibition-zone method by measuring the diameter of fungal growth inhibition produced by each treatment. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by post hoc analysis to identify significant differences among treatments. The results demonstrated that the ANOVA analysis produced p-values below 0.05, indicating significant differences in antifungal activity among the tested concentrations. The post hoc analysis also showed significant differences, particularly between the 20% and 40% treatments. Among the formulations, the 40% kombucha spray demonstrated the highest antifungal activity against F. oxysporum, with an average inhibition-zone diameter of 15.05 mm, categorized as a strong antifungal response. These findings indicate that butterfly pea flower-based kombucha, rooted in local wisdom of Rangkasbitung, Banten, has promising potential to be developed as a natural pharmaceutical biotechnology spray for controlling F. oxysporum in horticultural crops.
Firman Rezaldi, Yugga Tri Surahman
